Once you decide you need a Web site, it's time to decide who will build it. If you have the technical know-how or the money to hire a full-time Web staff, you can develop the site yourself. But if you're like most small businesses, you'll want to outsource the work.

Be careful who you hire, though. A poorly designed Web site can cost you money, drive away customers, and hurt your reputation. Follow a few basic steps to increase your odds of hiring a creative, technically savvy, and cost-effective design firm.

1. Assess your needs. You can hire contractors to create, implement and maintain your site. If your site will serve only as an online brochure, consider outsourcing the creation and implementation, while handling future maintenance - like fixing broken links - in-house. Be realistic about your own goals and growth plans so you know whether to hire a long-term or a short-term contractor.

2. Research each candidate's work. It's essential that you research a Web developer's work so you can evaluate their potential. Once you've found a few developers you like - through recommendations, Web directories or competitors' sites - evaluate their online portfolios and fees. A site doesn't have to be flashy to do its job, but you must appreciate the developer's design sense. Also, consider hiring a firm familiar with your particular industry.

3. Evaluate their services. Decide if the developer meets your needs. If you want to sell your products online, look for proven e-commerce experience. If you're considering a one-person firm, does the developer have the skills necessary to create everything you need? On the other hand, will you get lost in the shuffle at a larger firm with lots of other clients? Determine what extras the firms offer, such as copywriting, marketing, and other services.

4. Meet face-to-face. Your Web design firm, whether a one-person shop or a multinational company, is going to present your Web persona to the world. You must be able to work collaboratively. Ask yourself these questions and rely on your gut reaction:

* Do they listen to my needs?
* Do they explain issues in ways I can understand?
* Do they know my industry?
* Do they share my vision for the site?

5. Check references. Browsing a company's work is helpful, but you also want to know how they work. A Web design firm can be the most creative in the world, but if it never finishes your site, it won't do you much good. Call past clients and ask if the design firm:

* Adhered to deadlines
* Met their requests
* Was responsive to suggestions and questions
* Fixed problems promptly
* Worked within the original budget

6. Think ahead. Over the past year, hundreds of Web design firms of all sizes have merged, cut back their operations, or simply closed. Although it's impossible to know for sure whether or not a firm will be around in the future, you have a right to ask questions if you expect to build a long-term relationship. You should also ask whether a design firm will accept payment in stages or whether they'll demand most of their payment up front. Firms that aren't willing to link payment to their own ability to deliver might not be worth the risk you'll take to deal with them.

Who determines the minimum or starting bid?

The seller (the person who posted the item) decides what he or she wants the bidding to begin at. Usually this is (and should be) just below the lowest price acceptable for the item. If you bid, the system will ask you to bid the starting price PLUS the Bid Increment. Sellers are encouraged to start items at a reasonable amount and not absurdly high. Buyers like the auction process because it allows bargain shopping. If an item is priced right, people recognize the bargain and bid on it.

What is the Bid Increment?

The Bid Increment ($1 is the default increment) raises the bidding each time by that minimum amount (you can always bump it up even higher). The purpose of the bid increment is to keep someone from outbidding you by some silly amount like $.01. It protects you and assures the seller of getting a decent return if the item is hotly contested.

Okay, what are Proxy Bids?

Proxy bidding allows the system to bid for you automatically. Think of Proxy bidding as someone who stays and watches the auction 24 hours a day while you're off doing more interesting stuff. You activate Proxy Bidding by entering the highest amount you are willing to pay for an item into the place bid box. The system will then bid for you, bidding only enough to make you the high bidder. If someone tops that bid,our system places another bid for you and so on up to the maximum amount you've specified. Under no circumstances will Proxy Bidding ever bid MORE than you said. But the system will send you e-mail about an outbid so you can enter a higher Proxy Bid amount if you'd like.

In November I did a case study on getting links from leaving
well thought-out comments on blog posts that don't use the
NoFollow attribute.

Back then I gave the practice of using links in comments for SEO
purposes a 6 out of 10 on the "must-do" scale. I only gave it a
6 because, although it works well, it's just very difficult and
time consuming to find enough blogs to post at that don't use
the NoFollow attribute (which, in case you're not aware, prevents
Google from counting the link toward the ranking of your site).

Well, the days of drudging through the search results trying to
find DoFollow blogs is OVER! I found an OUTSTANDING piece of
software that does all the work for you in a teeny tiny fraction
of the time it takes if you do it manually -- it turns that 6
into a BIG 10.

I created a short video showing you how it works (it's barely 5
minutes long). Your jaw is going to drop at how easy it is to
get links from blog comments with this thing.

How Much Money Are We Earning CPC or CPM

Well, the forums have been buzzing lately with news that we can now see whether our Web pages have been site targeted, how much money we're earning for CPC ads and how much for CPM ads.

For those of you who missed it, all you have to do to see whether you've been site-targeted and how much benefit it brought you is visit your Advanced Reports page. Choose AdSense for content as the product, then ask to see data by 'Individual Ad Unit' from the drop-down menu. You'll be able to tick a checkbox marked "Show data by targeting type - contextual or site."

And what can you expect to see there?

Two things. First, whether or not an advertiser has chosen that page for site targeting. (Even small sites and small pages get picked so you could well be surprised -- and flattered.) And second, the eCPM for those pages.

What many people have seen though is that the eCPM for those pages is much lower than the eCPM for the pages with contextual ads. So many people have been seeing this, in fact, that Google added a new entry to their blog explaining that "site targeted ads are most likely appearing on lower performing pages within your account - in other words, pages requiring a lower eCPM to win the AdWords ad auction."

I think that's really the most important information I need to know about pages that have been site targeted. What Google is telling me is that if an advertiser site-targets a page on my website and succeeds in putting his ad there, it's because that page wasn't making me much money in the first place.

Sure, I'm pleased that a site-targeted campaign is increasing that page's earnings a little. But what I really want to know is why that page was making so little money that a site-targeted bid was able to be successful.

So am I going to be checking to see whether any of my pages are showing site-targeted ads?

Sure. And then I'm going to be comparing the layout and content of that page with my higher earning pages to see what I've been doing wrong. The question I'm going to be asking then is whether those site-targeted ads will go away once I start doing things right...
